Vestibular Neuronitis: Symptoms, Causes, Treatments

Vestibular Neuronitis is a neurological condition caused by inflammation of the inner ear nerve. Symptoms of this condition affect the vestibular nerve, which connects the inner ear to the brain.

The vestibular system includes three fluid-filled semicircular canals that react to the movement of the head. The signals of the movement are sent via the vestibular nerve to the brain where it is processed. When these canals are inflamed, the brain is unable to interpret information normally.

This condition is characterized by sudden and dramatic vertigo, eyes fluttering towards the affected side, as well as nausea and vomiting.

Symptoms

These are the symptoms of Vestibular Neuronitis:

  • Vertigo
  • Dizziness
  • Having difficulty with balance
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Unable to focus or think

Treatment

Vestibular Neuronitis is a mild ear condition that can disrupt your movement and perception. This can go away in a few days, but the symptoms may frequently occur for weeks. You may also experience a few dizziness episodes for the next few months.

There are several treatment options available for vestibular neuronitis, including:

  • antihistamines
  • anti-nausea medications
  • vestibular physiotherapy

Vestibular Neuronitis vs. Labyrinthitis

Vestibular Neuronitis is often confused with Labyrinthitis. Though in some cases they are similar, there are some notable differences between the two conditions.

When talking about Vestibular Neuronitis, this only refers to the inflammation of your vestibular nerve. With Labyrinthitis, both your vestibular nerve and your cochlear nerve are inflamed. The cochlear nerve is responsible for sending your brain signals to perceive your hearing.

Vestibular Neuronitis only causes vertigo and nausea, while Labyrinthitis causes hearing difficulties, tinnitus (otherwise known as the ringing in your ears) and vertigo.
