What is Labyrinthitis and How Do You Treat It?

Labyrinthitis is an infection of the inner ear. The inflammation affects the structures of this part of the ear and disrupts sensory information flowing from the ear to the brain. Symptoms can include dizziness, vertigo, and even loss of hearing.

There are two types of Labyrinthitis infections: viral and bacterial.

Labyrinthitis is most commonly caused by viral infections, but it can also be caused by bacterial infections. Bacterial labyrinthitis tends to be more severe than viral labyrinthitis, although both can cause similar symptoms such as:

  • Nausea
  • Feeling like you are spinning or vertigo
  • Losing balance
  • Erratic eye movement
  • Fever
  • Ear pain
  • Vomiting
  • Ringing in the ears or Tinnitus
  • Blurry vision

These symptoms can be reduced by:

  • resting on your side
  • avoiding alcohol
  • drinking plenty of water
  • creating a low-noise, low-stress environment
  • avoiding bright lights

There are other factors that may induce Labyrinthitis. These include:

  • Alcohol
  • Fatigue
  • Allergies
  • Ear infection
  • Smoking
  • Stress

You will receive treatment based on your symptoms, age, and general health. The severity of the condition will also determine what treatment suits you best.

It usually takes a few days for the symptoms to subside. Most people are able to recover within 2 to 6 weeks, but it may take longer in some cases.

If left untreated, labyrinthitis can lead to critical long-term complications. An ENT doctor can assess whether the condition has caused any permanent damage.
