What is Infectious Myringitis?

Infectious myringitis is a painful inflammation of the eardrum caused either by a virus or bacteria.

The extremely thin and delicate eardrum is the first component of the middle ear conductive system. There is a high risk of injury or infection to the eardrum, and diseases of the TM cause patients to be unable to work and enjoy life as a result.

Your body responds to this threat by forming small, fluid filled blisters on the surface of the eardrum.

Infectious Myrinigits is similar to Otitis Media in symptoms. However, Infectious Myringitis does not cause pus or fluid in the middle ear.

It can be difficult to determine whether the Infectious Myringitis is viral or bacterial. The only way to differentiate between the two is whether your symptoms show fever. If that’s the case, then it’s guaranteed to be a bacterial infection.

Regardless of the cause, most people will be treated with antibiotics and pain relieving medications to alleviate the infection. Pain relieving medications, or analgesics, may be given orally or as ear drops. You may also have your blisters professionally ruptured, but this is only done at the discretion of your ENT doctor.

Other symptoms of Infectious myringitis include:

  • Fluid draining out the infected ear
  • Ear congestion
  • Hearing loss
  • Throbbing pain in the ear

Depending on the conditions, acute myringitis becomes subacute after 3 weeks. After 3 months, this becomes chronic. Before the infection gets even worse, it’s best to visit a reliable ENT clinic.
