Ear Irrigation: A Safe Way to Clean Your Ears

Cleaning your ears with cotton buds is considered by the majority as basic hygiene. In truth, it harms your ears more than it does good.

There are safer, better ways for you to clean your ears – ear irrigation being one of them.

Ear irrigation, also known as ear syringing, is a process in which water is flushed inside your ears to soften and take out any built up cerumen or earwax. This is usually done by an ENT specialist.

As a patient, it’s only right for you to know the details of your recommended treatment. Here is the process as it follows:

  • The doctor will examine your ear canal to determine whether it is infected, and whether you have excess wax that needs to be removed.
  • The doctor will drop some medication in your ear to soften the ear wax.
  • The doctor fills a syringe for ear washing with warm water and flushes the ears until the ears are clean.

Ears don’t always need to be cleaned in order to maintain proper hygiene. Ear wax naturally falls off your ear canal through the movement of your jaw.

There are some instances in which the earwax build-up can be difficult to take out. This is when your ENT doctor will administer ear irrigation.

Home irrigation kits are also available at your local pharmacy. Here’s how to use those kits:

  1. Fill a soft rubber bulb syringe made for ear cleaning with warm water.
  2. Place a thick towel or basin underneath your ears and tilt your head to the side.
  3. Squeeze the bulb gently to release warm water into your ears.
  4. Ensure that the water runs into the towel or basin.
  5. Alternatively, you may use a bowl to see if any earwax falls out.

It is strongly advised that you avoid performing your own ear irrigation if:

  • you’ve had surgery in the eardrums
  • you’re susceptible to swimmer’s ear
  • the ear has been damaged by a sharp metal object
  • a history of disease or damage to the middle ear
  • a history of perforation of the eardrum
